Reverend Fred E. Martin passed peacefully surrounded by family into the arms of his Lord and Savior on November 9, 2013 at the age of 69. Born to Edward and Cleo Homesley Martin on July 25, 1944 in Hondo, TX, Fred grew up in a family of farmers and ranchers in Yancey, TX. Fred graduated from Yancey High School, attended Uvalde Junior College, and graduated from Southwestern University in Georgetown before going to St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, MO, where he earned his Masters of Divinity. He married Janice Hale Feb 25, 1967 and faithfully served in the Southwest Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church in Austin, Lyford, Freer, Yoakum, Uvalde, St. Luke's in Corpus Christi, New Braunfels, as Kerrville District Superintendent, then in Boerne where he retired in 2011 and moved to Seguin. This itinerate system allowed many friendships to be made, along with many unique experiences. Fred loved the Lord and loved his family. He found joy in serving and ministering to other people, meeting others' needs before his own, and was passionate about helping people know and love God. He enjoyed farming and ranching in retirement and loved the outdoors, hunting and wildlife. He was a 30 year member of Rotary International. Fred is survived by his wife, Janice; son, David (Jennifer), Denton; daughter, Jana Jones (Evan), Plano; and grandchildren, Cullen, Brady and Slayden Martin, and Kyler and Harper Jones. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Lee Welsch, Bastrop; brother, Homer Martin (Florrie), Carrizo Springs; and sister-in-law, Jane Martin, Hondo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Oliver Martin; and brother-in-law, Bill Welsch. A visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 11 from 5-7 pm at Tres Hewell Mortuary, 165 Tor Dr., Seguin. Graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 1:30 pm at San Geronimo Cemetery, with Bishop Joel Martinez and Reverend Keith Wyatt officiating, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at First United Methodist Church at 3:00 pm, 710 N. Austin St., Seguin, 78155 with Reverend Keith Wyatt and Reverend Ron Welborn officiating. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center.
