Freda Lee Scales, 92, of San Antonio, TX, passed away August 7, 2012. She was born May 16, 1920, in Clinton, IL, to Lee and Nelle (Woodward) Thompson. Freda married Edward Frances Scales on June 16, 1946, in Clinton, IL. He died January 24, 1997. Freda was among the first women to enlist in the WACCS. She served from Sept, 1942 to Sept, 1945, and was stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II. Freda and Eddie lived in Creve Coeur, IL, before moving to San Antonio, TX, in 1977. She was very active in Girl Scouts, becoming the director of the area service unit or neighborhood. She was a troop leader for all of her daughters, several of whom went on to be troop leaders also. Freda loved to craft and to read. She could usually be found working on some craft project while sitting on her patio with her beloved dog, Betsy. Freda donated many hours to the thrift shop at Randolph Air Force Base and was a member of the Randolph Enlisted Wives Club. Square dancing was also a passion of hers. She danced with Eddie for over 50 years and continued to dance after his death. They belonged to several local square dance clubs and participated in exhibition round dancing for many years, attending many National Square Dance Conventions. They also belonged to the Camping Squares and camped often, traveling throughout the United States. Freda is survived by her daughters - Cinda (Bob) Asp of Rockton, IL, Tara Sennett of Lincoln, IL, Sheri Crothers of San Antonio, TX, Donna (Omar) Svensson of Bellevue, NE, and Marta Kolasa of Chicago, IL, as well as nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
