Rex and I wish to offer our prayers to Helen's family. We live across the street from Helen's and Franks long time San Antonio home. We did not see a great deal of them as we both of stayed very busy. After Helen retired, I did get to visit with her more. We shared our past times in Ft. Worth and both our connections to TCU. Helen would be happy to know that her long interest in young women in science has again been addressed here in San Antonio and that there was a lengthy article concerning that event very recently in our paper. At the time I hoped she knew of the event. Helen was a devoted teacher and her family should know how much she was respected for her dedication as a role model for young women. Ellen Martin

Helen Oujesky was a great asset to San Antonio, where - through UTSA and several educational organizations - she helped many a young person in obtaining a solid education. She was a role model for those in AAUW and gave of her time unselfishly. We will not forget her endeavors on behalf of all women and girls in advancing equity through advocacy, education, and research.

Our friend, Helen Oujesky was President of the San Antonio AAUW Branch in 1985-1987. A long-time AAUW member, Helen was also President of AAUW Texas from 1994-1996.
As a professor of microbiology Helen’s scientific background made her a natural to spearhead our branch’s Expanding Your Horizons program for several years at UTSA. This is a program that introduces middle-school girls to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics or STEM topics in an annual day-long learning experience.
Many honors came Helen’s way. For example she was inducted into the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame in 1987, in the Science and Technology category. Ten years later she was inducted into the Texas Woman’s Hall of Fame. In 1998, Helen was honored with her selection for the AAUW Texas’ Outstanding Member Award.
She will be remembered in this branch as a shining example of a woman who was a powerful advocate and visible leader in education through research, philanthropy and one who made a change in the lives of women and girls.

Helen was a wonderful woman who inspired so many women and girls. Her work at UTSA and with Expanding Your Horizons introduced young girls to professions in science and math. I knew her through many years of AAUW work on the San Antonio Branch Board and AAUW Texas Board. Helen mentored me into positions at the state and national level. I always enjoyed her company - she was the first real scientist I knew! I will always remember the road trips we took to state and national conventions, getting lost on the way to Tyler and storming Capitol Hill in D.C. At times Helen seemed like the absent-minded professor, but once you worked with her you knew she was a force of nature. Helen made a difference in this world and she will be greatly missed.
