Johnie Overton Obituary
Johnie David Overton (Dave), DDS, COL USAF (ret), 60, passed away in San Antonio, Texas, Saturday, April 20, 2013 after a long illness. Dave was born July 23, 1952 in Whitney, Texas, to Charles and the late Hazel Smith Overton. Dave graduated from Whitney High School in 1970, and continued his education at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, TX, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in 1974.
Following college graduation in 1974, Dave had a busy summer: he and Mary Elizabeth Ray were married at Fort Sam Houston in June, and he began dental school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). Graduating in 1978 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree, Dave immediately joined the Air Force to fulfill his service commitment. They were stationed across the US and overseas, including Shepherd AFB in Wichita Falls, TX, where their son John was born in 1984; Misawa AFB in Japan; and Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS. After serving 22 years in the Air Force, Dave retired as a full colonel in 1999, and went into private practice in Biloxi until 2002 when he and the family returned to San Antonio (a wise decision and move - the dental practice was washed away by Hurricane Katrina in 2005).
In 2003, Dave began his second dental career as faculty of the Dental School at UTHSCSA, and for 10 years he continued to educate, train and inspire the dental students and residents in his care. As head of the division of Operative Dentistry, he was a fantastic teacher; in 2010, his peers selected him to receive the Presidential Award for Teaching Excellence at the UT Health Science Center. Dave's students had the utmost respect for him and continued to stay in touch with him years after graduation, to provide him with their career updates and to express their gratitude to him once again.
Dave loved golf. Anytime, anywhere, any chance he could take, he'd play golf. As his illness progressed, it became more and more difficult for him to get out for a game, but he would still get out on the course with his friends and, as he said, 'play some real bad golf'. He'll be missed out there, and his family and friends will miss him as well in all the places golf is not played which, Dave would agree, are probably not worth going to anyway. In a touching tribute to Dave, his peers, students and residents at the UT Dental School have created a trophy for their annual golf tournament, the Overton Cup, as well as an fund for dental students.
Dave is survived by his wife of 39 years, Mary; son, John; father Charles and step-mother Eileen, brothers Jeff and wife Ruth Overton of Jasper, TX, and Steve Overton of Whitney, TX; stepbrother Maynard Sharrow, and stepsisters Nancy and Tricia Sharrow of Whitney. In San Antonio, Dave is survived by his father and mother-in-law John Ray and late wife Charlotte, sisters-in laws Rebecca Holloway, Jennifer Rosanbalm, and Melissa Isbell, MD, and many more friends in San Antonio, Whitney, elsewhere in Texas, and around the world.
Memorial services will be held in Whitney May 4, 2013, and at UTHSCSA (details pending). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Overton Fund at the Dental School at the UT Health Science Center, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive MC 7906, San Antonio, TX 78229.
