Mary Hely Obituary

HELY
Dec 15, 1925 - Dec 15, 2010

Mary Alice Engler Hely, born in St. Louis MO, was the adored daughter of Alice (Walsh) Engler, loving wife of 64 years to Joseph W. Hely (deceased May 22, 2010), sister of Jack Engler (Jane McCauley), son Joseph W. Hely, Jr. (Nell and sons Robert and Chase) and daughter Marilyn Tomasello (Jim). Married to her husband Joe on July 3, 1946, Mary Alice was a devoted Army wife, living in Germany following WWII and then later with orders to move to Texas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia, Hawaii and finally settling back home in St. Louis. Joe served in 3 wars during their marriage; WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. As an 85th birthday gift, God invited Mary Alice to join him in the Heaven. She brought with her a batch of homemade caramels which she always made for her friends, relatives and neighbors during the Christmas Season. Mary Alice came from a large, extended Irish family with many cousins who later in life formed the 'Cousins' Club' which met on a regular basis in order to stay in touch with each other and share family stories. On their 50th wedding anniversary, the entire wedding party from 1946 was in attendance with the exception of the Best Man, who perished during the Korean War. Mary Alice's life was filled with things she loved to do best. All meals including desserts were homemade. She loved to iron the clothes and linens, cut the grass, build jigsaw puzzles, root for her Cardinal baseball team, sew, work with children with disabilities, and ballroom dance. She particularly enjoyed all things French and Hawaiian. Our rescue pet, Charlie-dog, was her devoted friend because she fed him and let him out in the back yard every day. In 2008, Mary Alice and Joe moved out of their home of 43 years in Ballwin and relocated into a retirement community in San Antonio, home of their son, Joe Jr. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X church on Harry Wurzbach Highway at 9:15 A.M. on December 22, 2010, with burial with her husband Joe at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please make a charitable contribution in Mary Alice's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, St. Louis Chapter, 9370 Olive Blvd, St. Louis MO. 63122-3214.

It is only now that I found out about both, Joe Ed and Mary Alice, with great sorrow and grief. I am a german, whose father was a great friend of the Hely's for years before he passed in 2000. We, my sister and me - together with our families, continued this friendship. The Hely's even visited us in Cologne, Germany in 2001.
I personally was granted with the priviledge to get to know thier daughter - it must have been 1992, I guess.
If any of the family of close to the family is interested in contact and reads this, I'd be proud. My e-mail: [email protected]

Love and God bless all, Joerg

Mary Alice, you are the best Aunt that any of us could ever want. You were the most pleasant, kind and gentle of people I have ever met. You set the bar high for all of us to follow, to live a quality life and to be caring for our family and friends and animals. I hope to develop the qualities you tought all of us and to attain the life values you cherished. Thank you for being in our lives and providing us with so much love and understanding . We are all better having been taught by your example.

Dear Mary Alice, I will always treasure the memories I have of you and Uncle Joe. You are a super aunt to all of us and we miss you. I have the snowman you made from scratch and I call him "Snazzy". I think of you whenever I look at the details you lovingly made by hand. I take comfort in the fact that you are with Uncle Joe again. Rest well, Aunt Mary Alice. We love you! Luci
