Raymond Potterf Obituary

POTTERF
Raymond DeWayne Potterf, M.D., Ph.D. passed away peacefully on Monday, February 17, 2014 in San Antonio, his home of 41 years. He was 72 years old. Born on June 11, 1941 in Goodland, Kansas, he was the son of the late Dorthy and Tom Potterf. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judy. He is also survived by his daughter Traci of Kailua, Hawaii and his son and daughter-in-law Jason and Vivian Potterf of Austin, TX.

From a young age, Raymond was fascinated with science and the wonders of the natural world. He also loved children and looked forward to becoming a father. He came from poverty and was the quintessential self-made man, fueled by a drive to help people and start a family that would be more fortunate than his own. He succeeded.

He earned a Ph.D. in medical biochemistry from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, followed by an M.D. from the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. He specialized in psychiatry and neuro-psychiatry. He ran a successful practice, serving thousands of patients over his 28 year career. He loved his profession and cared for his patients compassionately and often charitably. He retired in August of 2013.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate his life at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Mission Park North Funeral Chapel, 3401 Cherry Ridge Drive, San Antonio, TX with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the San Antonio Food Bank or the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation.

Dr. Potterf told me "Jesus isn't coming back" I told him he's not coming back for YOU ! The Good Dr. wasn't watching for Jesus so I was right...He didn't come for Dr. Potterf. Won't be seeing him in the afterlife.

Was thinking of Dr. Pottery today...he was such a good doctor and he took good care of Carl Schlottman for many years. Have not found any doctor who comes close to the care he received. I hope his family is doing well. Blessings...

I worked with Ray in the early 1980s, where he was my unit psychiatrist at San Antonio State Hospital and later referred me private practice cases for psychological testing. We had many great conversations about psychiatry and technology. Ray was a fine doctor. I just found this by accident and with regret. I will miss him.

I was a psych nurse and I often looked up to this Doctor for his expertise. I saw first hand the amazing care he gave to his patients from every age perspective. He was truly, truly dedicated to his patients, and would often take those patients no other psychiatrist wanted. And lastly, he was very, very nurse-friendly. Thank you, Dr. Potterf for all you did for the community of San Antonio. Rest in peace.

Dr. Potterf was like a second dad to my children and a great mentor to me, their mom, for well over 10 years. He saved our lives and taught us to stretch in so many ways through educations and other.
He helped me after Villa Rosa days realize I needed to make the break with my husband. Looking back, as hard as it was being a single mom, he kept me mentally in the right place. My adult kids would not be where they are today, nor I, without his caring love and support.
