Robert Murphy Obituary

MURPHY
Robert (Jerry) Jeremiah Michael Murphy died March 7th, 2011 at the age of 75 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Jerry was born January 1, 1936 in Raton, New Mexico. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Ramage Murphy, to whom he had been married for over 50 years. Father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he will be terribly missed by many. Jerry served his country in the US Army for over 21 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel and Vietnam War veteran. He was a recipient of the Army's Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and U.S. Army Commendation Medal. He earned a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Oklahoma and held a second career as a professor at both his alma mater and the University of South Florida, throughout which he supervised more than 50 master's and doctoral candidates, instructed hundreds of other students, and contributed significantly to his field with two patents and more than three dozen presentations and publications. After his retirement from academia he remained active as a senior consultant with the firm Chastain-Skillman in Lakeland, Florida, for whom he provided well-respected engineering services to local, state, and national governments and private corporations. He was a registered professional engineer in both Oklahoma and Florida, served on national-level committees, and was a Diplomat in the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, the highest credential in his field. He will posthumously receive the national Air & Waste Management Association's 2011 Waste Management Award. Jerry was devoted to his family, loved his work, cultivated many deep friendships, and was a Catholic of extraordinary faith. He is survived by two sisters, his three children, Nancy Elizabeth Hammer, Sean W.R. Murphy, Amy C. Murphy, son-in-law Ken Major, six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

I was given the honor of caring for Mr. Murphy and was truly blessed. He traveled the last few months of his journey with such dignity and grace. You showed such great love for him. He must of been such a wonderful father. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. May God bless you all and help you through this most difficult time. Love Sandi McKinney

I only met you, Jerry, briefly on a cold Saturday morning while us Emmaus brothers cleaned up at Reseurrection. You left an impression on me with your quiet unassuming demeanor despite being a college professor, an officer, and a veteran. I will not forget you because your humility and our common heritage of eastern New Mexico and USF. All this was revealed through my curious quizzing . I am sorry I missed knowing you better.

We will pray for you Brother and for your family.

Dear Jerry:

You were a fine Emmaus brother and we shared the Emmaus experience together some years ago. I knew you were a humble and thoughtful man, but I had no idea of your many accomplishments and your deep intelligence. God bless you.
