Shirley Ann (Nick) Ayers, 79, returned to her kin in the early hours of October 23, 2013 at the Medina Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center where she lived since December, 2012. Born in Greenville, MS on September 10, 1934, she was the daughter of Emil Leo Nick Sr. and Adeline (Fury) Nick. Shirley was the youngest of five children. She was preceded in death by her brother Donald Nick, and sisters Mary Nick, and Charlotte Crawford.? On February 18, 1955, Shirley married Lt. Richard Lee Ayers of Waterloo, Iowa. They lived the Air Force life, and resided on bases in Texas, Kansas, and England. Many years after Colonel Ayers went missing in Vietnam, she married Thomas Smeltzer in Universal City, TX, on July 17, 1999. Thomas passed away in October - 2001.?Shirley enjoyed her family and friends, playing the piano, playing card games, and over the years had been an active volunteer at Boysville in San Antonio and at Northeast Baptist Hospital.? Shirley leaves her daughters, Shirley Lynn Ayers Wild and husband, Ron H. of Montpelier, VT, Lisa Ayers Bippert and husband, David W. of Rio Medina, TX; grandchildren, Richard Isaac Silverman, Colt Bippert and Travis Bippert. Her surviving brother, Emil Nick Jr. and his wife Bobbie, reside in Greenville, MS.? She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews who live across the southern United States. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. with a memorial prayer service held at 6:30 p.m. during visitation at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville, TX. Visitation will also be held at the Mortimer Funeral Home in Greenville, MS on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Greenville, MS followed by interment at the Greenville City Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Boysville of San Antonio, TX or The Medina Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in Castroville, TX.
