Jay Ota Randolph High School class of ’78. Amazing after all these years you realize what an impact your high school teachers and coaches had on your life. While I have many memories of those years only a few have survived the passage of time. One of the most vivid for me was my junior year. The coaches wanted me to try pole vaulting. So Coach English decided to mentor me in the finer skills of the sport. He had me climbing the rope upside down. Running sprints and learning to get my steps down. After all that work he took me to the pole vaulting pit. He gave me a pole and told me to try and get over the bar.
I looked and asked what bar he was talking about. He had his hand on his hips and asked if I was blind. He said there’s only one bar! I said you mean that bar way up there? He just looked at me with that look, shook his head, and told me to just do it! Of course in my head I thought he was crazy.
After several attempts, never even getting a bend in the pole, he ran to the track and got a hurdle. He put the hurdle in front of the pole vaulting pit and asked it I could jump that!! Sadly to say I couldn’t even get over that! Of course secretly I had already decided I wasn’t doing this “pole vaulting” thing when I saw how high the original bar was!! Hahahahahaha
It’s only after I learned of his passing did I learn of his accident in 2004. We all want to leave this life knowing that we accomplished something. I hope Coach English knew how many lives he touched over the years. I can only speak for my years at Randolph High School. Yet I’m sure he passed his torch to many over during his time with all of us.
God Bless Coach English and family.
Sincerely,
Jay Ota

My condolences to Terry's wife and family. He only had the welfare of others on his mind and went out of his way to help. Whether it was loading soda machines, working with QBs or changing a tire, Terry was the first one there and the last one to leave. God Bless You.
