Wesley Mabrito Obituary
Wesley John "Wes" Mabrito, age 95, born July 3, 1917, in San Antonio, died June 6, 2013. A 1935 graduate of Jefferson High School, he attended Texas A&I University (Texas A&M-Kingsville) and graduated from St. Mary's University. Wes retired in 1980 as an education specialist and speech writer for Brooke Army Medical Center. His previous career positions included sportswriter for the San Antonio Express, editor of the Heights Citizen newspaper in Houston, US Border Patrol in McAllen, US Navy in San Diego, newscast writer at former KABC radio station in San Antonio, coach at Peacock Military Academy, sportswriter and fishing editor at The San Antonio Light, sportswriter and outdoor editor at the San Antonio Evening News. Wes was one of very few individuals who had worked as a full-time reporter at different periods for all three San Antonio metropolitan newspapers. He started his editorial career in the Express sports department under Sports Editor Ward Burris in 1937, and later worked under Sports Editor Harold Scherwitz at The Light, and under Sports Editor Johnny Janes at the Evening News. Wes authored numerous articles in national publications and wrote a popular fishing column "Hook, Line and Sinker" in The Light and later "Hook, Lyin' and Sinker" in the Evening News and Sunday Express. He spent many enjoyable hours officiating high school football and basketball games. Wes was a member of the Southwest Football and Southwest Basketball Officials Associations and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He was an active Cub and Boy Scout leader for his 3 sons, a life member of the Parent-Teacher Association and a 28-year volunteer at the Institute of Texas Cultures. Wes was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Eugenia Mabrito; his wife of 64 years, Eloise Bridges Mabrito; his brothers, Martel and Van Mabrito and sister, Gladys Edwards. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Lynda Mabrito of San Antonio; Lee and Marsha Mabrito and Craig and Judy Mabrito of Houston; granddaughter, Kathryn Palmisano and husband, Felix; grandsons, Garrick, Gregory, Colin and Robin Mabrito; step grandsons, Ryan and Shawn Callahan; great granddaughters, Madison and Haleigh Mabrito; great grandsons, Lleyton and Orion Mabrito and Kaden Palmisano; sister, Mrs. Richard E. (Gloria) Williams and brother-in-law, Cleveland "Buddy" Edwards. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 14, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough Ave. Private family graveside services will precede the memorial service.
