MCCARTHY
It has pleased God to call to Himself BRO. WILLIAM R. McCARTHY, S.M., on August 20, 2013, at the age of 89. Bro. Bill was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on September 11, 1923, to Thomas and Margaret (O'Donnell) McCarthy, one of four sons and two daughters. He attended William Cullen McBride High School in St. Louis, where he decided to join the Marianists through the influence of his freshman teacher, Bro. George Scherrer. He made his first profession of vows at Galesville, Wisconsin, in 1942, and graduated from the University of Dayton in 1944 with a B.A. in Education. He was assigned to Central Catholic High School in San Antonio, the first of three such occasions totaling 39 years, where he taught Social Studies while coaching football, basketball, and golf. Bro. Bill also worked for thirteen years in various schools in the missions of Peru, and was the Marianist Province recruiter for six years (1952-58). He retired to Central Catholic in 1986, and moved to the Marianist Residence at St. Mary's University in 2007. An avid stamp collector and golfer, Bro. Bill was proud to "shoot his age" when he was 81. His sister, Sr. Sheila McCarthy, O.P., died in October, 2010, after 75 years as a Sparkhill (NY) Dominican. Rosary will be recited Sunday, August 25, 2013 at 7:00 P.M. in the Marianist Residence Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be offered Monday, August 26, 2013 at 4:00 P.M. in the Marianist Residence Chapel. Interment will follow in the Marianist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marianist Mission. Arrangements by:
