Laverne Markert, 80
Laverne Helen Markert was granted her angel wings on March 17, 2014.
Laverne was born December 19, 1933, in Giddings, Texas, to Martin and Sophie Kipp. Loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Laverne was richly blessed with the skills of homemaker, tutor, and wonderful chef, gifts that put many smiles on many people.
Laverne was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church, baptized January 28, 1934, and confirmed at Martin Luther Lutheran Church in Giddings on April 11, 1948. She made Texas her home for her entire life, 62 of those years with her loving and devoted husband, Gene, whom she married on January 6, 1952. Laverne and Gene retired to Schertz, Texas in 1988.
She loved gardening, crafts, and reading. Her immaculately kept house was only surpassed by her incredible cooking, most noteworthy her German coffee cake, cinnamon rolls, salmon croquettes, cornbread dressing, and turkey gravy. She was friendly and courteous to all, living by the Golden Rule in all of her encounters.
Laverne is survived by her husband Eugene; sons and their spouses Alan & Connie Markert and Rodney & Sherry Markert; daughters and their spouses Gayle & Michael Morris and Gwyn & Scott Cressman.
"Granny"is survived by 7 grandchildren and their spouses: Lauren & Todd Metzgar, Zachary & Daryl Morris, Nathan Morris, Kimberly Cressman, Hannah Markert, Matthew Cressman, and Sophie Markert. She is also survived by 3 great grandchildren: Isaiah, Elijah, and Jessie Morris.
Laverne is survived by her brothers and their spouses: Walter & Lillie Kipp, Marvin& Elizabeth Kipp, Martin Jr. & Bell Kipp, and Jerry & Ann Kipp. She is survived by her sister and spouse Marchelle & Johnny Sutton and her brothers-in-law David Smith and Eddie Tyler.
She was preceded in death by her sisters Betty Jane Smith, Diana Tyler, and infant sister Rosemary.
Laverne is also survived by her brother- and sisters-in-law Bernhard Markert, Bernell Markert, Della Markert, and Martha Markert.
She was preceded in death by her brothers- and sisters-in-law Gilbert Markert, Grace & Andrew Leitko, Doris Markert, Weldon Markert, Ray Markert, Ann& Warren Davis, and Anita & Gairdy Hutto.
We will celebrate Laverne's wonderful life on Friday, March 21, at 3:30 PM at Sunset Funeral Chapel, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas, with the Rev. Ralph Reitmeyer of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Universal City, Texas, officiating.
Laverne and Gene's wishes are that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in her name to Christ the King Lutheran Church, Universal City, Texas.
