George Carl Gutschke

George C. Gutschke was born April 29, 1924 in Yorktown, Texas. He was the son of German Immigrants Emil August Gutschke and Olga Semmler Gutschke, owners of the Cozy Café and Bakery in Orange Grove. George grew up in Orange Grove and graduated from Orange Grove High School in 1943. He was a member of the 1939 State Champion Six-Man Football team. Immediately after graduation he and other members of that football team enlisted in the army. He was a member of the 29th Infantry Division and was part of the Invasion force landing on Omaha Beach on the morning of June 6, 1944 where he was awarded the Bronze star for heroism in battle. He was wounded on June 9, 1944 and earned the Purple Heart. He married Dolly Robbins on July 7, 1951 in San Antonio. He worked for Goad Motor/Riata Cadillac and retired from Civil Service at Ft. Sam Houston in 1988. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Emil, Otto, Ekwald, and sister Gertrude. Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years Dolly and three children - Linda and her spouse Clayton, Glenn and his spouse Cindy, and Kent; his sister Dorothea Brumme of Alice, Texas as well as his five grandchildren - Lisa and her spouse Abe, Jared, Robyn, Aaron, Rachael Rose, and two great granddaughters - Lauren, Eliza Rose; to include his extended family, friends, and his faithful dog Rusty.

Visitation will be Sunday March 23rd from 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral service will be Monday March 24th at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel. Interment will follow at Mission Burial Park South.
