NEWTON
Arthur Newton, Lt. Col., Medical Service Corps U.S. Army, Retired, age 100, of San Antonio, died Wednesday, March 26, 2014. He was born in San Antonio, Texas on May 27, 1913 to the late Frank Richards Newton and Carrie Thomason Boyle Newton. Arthur was a graduate of Main Avenue High school and founding member of Main Avenue High School Alumni Association. After high school he attended San Antonio College and the University of Texas at Austin where he received B.A. and M.A. degrees. While at the university he was also a Teaching Fellow in Mycology and member of the Beta Theta Pi and Phi Sigma fraternities. He was member and ruling elder of First Presbyterian Church, former deacon, former president of the Usher's Guild and former director of the church library. Arthur was a member of the following clubs and organizations: San Antonio, TX, The Order of the Alamo, Club Giraud, The University Club of New York, The Saint Nicholas Society of New York, Society of Colonial Wars, Sons of the Revolution, Society of the Descendents of the Founders of Hartford, American Society for Microbiology, International Society for Human and Animal Mycology and Main Avenue High School Alumni Association. Arthur is survived by nieces, Mrs. Carrie Turner Davison, Mrs. Patricia Johnson Greene, Miss Anne Stout Newton, Mrs. Cynthia Newton Gayden and her husband, William Kernan Gayden, and Mrs. Evelyn Johnson Marko and her husband, Edward J. Marko; numerous great nieces and great nephews, great great nieces and nephews. The family expresses deep gratitude and appreciation for the excellent compassionate care given to Arthur by Anna and Ray Magott. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Porter Loring on McCullough.

Reverend Scott Simpson will officiate. Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Alamo Masonic Cemetery (East Commerce and N. Pine). Pallbearers are: Pat Spollin, Matt Spollin, Roger Moore, Donald Simonds, Dennis Anderson, Ray Magott and Milton McFarland. Honorary Pallbearers are: Member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity Alumni of San Antonio. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church Library, 404 North Alamo San Antonio, TX 78205.
