Barbara Skaggs Obituary
SKAGGS
Barbara Skaggs, age 74, our beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin, honorary grandmother and friend, joined the Heavenly Choir on March 28, 2014, in LifeCare Hospital with her family at her side. She had been hospitalized almost continuously for about a year with complications from diabetes. Her loving and sweet Christian spirit, joyous and outgoing personality, beautiful voice, infectious laugh and dazzling smile will be long remembered and sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Her greatest joys were in her full-time job as a wife and mother, later as the "honorary grandmother" of five children she kept in her home nursery for three or four years from birth, and still later in her ministry as a volunteer chaplain at the Bexar County Jail. She was in that ministry for seventeen years, where she counseled, was in charge of the music, sang, and substitute taught in women's Bible classes until over a year ago when she had to stop because of her health. Although her voice was professional-quality and she sang at various church and school functions when she was a child and sang lead with a trio when she was in high school that sang on TV, military bases, etc. - she didn't like singing in public and didn't start again until a few years ago in her jail ministry and Bible and Sunday School classes, where she was a member of Castle Hills First Baptist Church for many years. She also sang solos once a month in the Bone of my Bone church services. She was born Barbara Jean Belyeu on October 26, 1939, in Benevides, Texas. She grew up in Banquete, Texas, where she graduated from High School. She went to beauty school and later worked as an x-ray and laboratory technician and also obtained travel agent and real estate licenses. She married on September 3, 1960. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer Cecil Belyeu and Fannie Evelyn Belyeu. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, William Roy (Skipper) Skaggs, Jr.; children William Roy (Chip) Skaggs, III and Alana Michelle Skipski and son-in-law Andrew Skipski; brother, Terry Lee Belyeu and sister-in-law Joyce Belyeu; nieces Corvette Wiseley and Brandy Belyeu; grand-nephew Chanze Wiseley and grand-niece Chesney Wiseley; and honorary grandchildren Rick Weld, Rob Weld, Nicole Weld, Stephanie Rought and Jacob Dickson. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday April 7, 2014, at Castle Hills First Baptist Church (Main Sanctuary), 2220 NW Military Hwy., San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to T.I.M.E. for Christ Jail Ministries Box 780484, San Antonio, TX 78278-0484, (www.timeforchristministries.com/jail.html) and/or (www.diabetes.org/donate).
