MSgt. John J. Mitchell, United States Marine Corps (Ret.), passed away on April 26, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat, and his children, Patricia, Heidi (Michael), Timothy (Edie), Kathleen, and John Jr. (Teresa); 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Elsie Thompson. Sgt. Mitchell was born in Albany, New York, on May 29, 1929 to Harry Francis Mitchell and Pearl Hastings Mitchell. He is preceded in death by his son Michael; his mother Pearl; his father Harry; his sisters Harriet (Betty) and Marcia Lee; and his twin brothers Paul and Raymond. MSgt. Mitchell served 21 years in the United States Marine Corps. He served in China during the evacuation of American Nationals and was with the 3rd BN 7th Marines at the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea in 1950. He also served in Vietnam from 1965 until 1966. His MOS was Intelligence, Scout Sniper. He enlisted in 1947 and retired in 1968. The United States Marine Corps was his greatest love after his family. SEMPER FI. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 30, between the hours of 1830 and 2030 (6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.), at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
