PORTER
CMSGT USAF RET, Melvin D. Porter, Sr., age 92, passed away on May 5, 2014. Born April 9, 1922 in Macomb, IL, he was the eldest son of the late Jesse Porter and Gladys Hawkins Porter.
He is predeceased by his loving wife of fifty two years, Evelyn, beloved son, Mel Porter Jr., and eleven of his fourteen siblings.
Melvin is survived by his daughters, Diane Lea with husband Pat, Debbie Gayle and daughter-in-law, Betsy Burton. He is also survived by granddaughters Kimberly Chumbley with husband Lynn, Sarah Fitzgerald with husband Mike, and Katie Lea. Beloved great-grandchildren are Lawson, Kaitlyn, Deacon and Hudson Chumbley and Landon Fitzgerald. He is also survived by brothers Donald and Marshall Porter and sisters Margaret Porter and Marilyn Reeves along with many other extended family members and friends.
Melvin proudly served his country in the CCCs (1939-1941), Army,Army AirCorps (1941-1945) and a career in the USAF from 1947 until retirement in 1973. He was inducted into the USAFSS/ESC Hall of Honor in September 1990.
Melvin was a beloved husband, father and grandfather who was admired greatly by all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and continue to live in our hearts and minds forever.
Services
Memorial Service will be held Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North at 3:00 P.M. Interment will be held Monday, May 12, 2014 at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at 12:30 P.M.
