Patricia Jane Ward Powell, retired teacher, 76, went Home to the Lord on May 29, 2014 at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Patricia was loved and cherished by many as a devout Christian, daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, soror, care-giver, healer, teacher, disciplinarian, dancer, activist, philanthropist, and world traveler.
Patricia was born in Marion, Indian on February 7, 1938. She thrived through her Christian faith and her belief in the power of education. She began her career as a registered nurse in Akron, Ohio in 1960. After marrying her husband MSG Lovelys Powell, she began her adventure as a military spouse who relished the opportunity to travel the world. After her two sons left home for college, Patricia returned to school to earn her elementary teaching certificate in an effort to answer her life-long calling as an educator.
Survivors: children: CW02 Bradley L. Powell and Tulara Powell, Camp Carroll, South Korea, and Lovelys Powell Jr., The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas; grandchildren: Anta Powell, Asiah Powell, Austin Powell, and Devon Greene; mother Mae George Bradley; brothers: Donald Meredith Ward, Thomas Eugene Ward (Phyllis), Archer Adams Bradley; sister Glennis Darlene Crooks; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, mentors, and life-long friends.
Preceded by: husband Lovelys Powell (January 11, 1989); mother Anna Lillian Thomas Ward; father Eddie Ward; father Rev. James R. Bradley; siblings: John Preston Ward, Lois Anita Ward Bowlds, James Bradley Jr., and Carl Von Bradley.
Her life was also enriched by her extended family: the Kellys, the Drakes, and the Hunters who made sure that even though she was far from home, she was always with family.
Services will be held Sunday, June 8, 2014 from 2:00PM-3:30PM at the Del Webb Hill Country Retreat Resort, 4550 Del Webb Blvd., San Antonio, Texas 78253. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking you to consider a donation in the name of Patricia J. Powell to The United Negro College Fund or the .
