Butler Toland Obituary
TOLAND
Butler Bell Toland, Jr., was born in l921 in Nashville, Arkansas, raised there and in Little Rock. He learned to fly a bi-wing under an FDR program and joined the Army Air Corps with his commission a week after his 21st birthday. He flew at Guadalcanal and in the Solomons during WW2, and upon his return to Little Rock in l945, courted and married Edna Ward O'Hair over the Christmas holidays. His Air Force career took him from England in the early 50's and to Saigon as Air Attaché in the early l960's, and all over the southern U.S. in between. He retired in 1968 holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Butler was most proud of his participation in various Masonic orders, as his Irish ancestors since the 1700's had been. He held membership in these orders: Master Mason, Royal Arch Mason, Scottish Rite Mason, and Knight Commander Court of Honor. He was also a National Sojourner and had volunteered for 24 years at the Christian Assistance Ministry (CAM). He was a longtime member of Christ Episcopal Church in San Antonio. He spent many happy hours with the wonderful people at the Army Residence Community in northeast San Antonio, and died on the same day, six years later, that Edna Ward did. He is survived by his two daughters, Holly Toland and Brooks Toland Kasson of Austin, grandchildren, Starr and Will Kasson, and great-grandson, Carter Kasson. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
