Willy Verboomen Obituary
VERBOOMEN
Reverend Willy Verboomen, CICM, was born in Mechelen, Belgium on June 7, 1938. He entered the novitiate of the missionary Congregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Scheut) in 1957. The congregation is popularly known in the USA as Missionhurst-CICM. He was ordained to the priesthood on August 4, 1963. Between 1964 and 1979 he ministered in CICM missions in the Congo, Belgium, and London. In 1979, he moved to the CICM province in the USA and was assigned to St. Jude and St. Gabriel Parishes in San Antonio, and later served as Assistant Director of the CICM Mission Center in Arlington, Virginia. Fr. Willy was then assigned in the Diocese of Brownsville, Texas, where he worked in several border parishes with the very poor. He also obtained a Master's Degree in Pastoral Health Care from St. Louis University that prepared him for his long time service as Chaplain at the McAllen Medical Center. During that time, he also enjoyed serving as a cruise ship chaplain. Fr. Willy retired to San Antonio because of poor health, but continued to serve in many parishes as much as his health allowed. Fr. Willy died in San Antonio on August 12, 2014. His smile and lively spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by nieces and nephews in Belgium and his brothers in his religious community. The CICM community is grateful for the loving and caring staff at Padua Place who cared for Fr. Willy for the past several years, and to the staff at University Hospital who cared for him in his final illness. Services: Visitation at San Martin de Porres Church, on Monday, August 18th, beginning at 6:00 p.m. with Rosary at 7:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 19, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at San Martin de Porres Church. In lieu of flowers, the CICM community suggests contributions in his memory to Missionhurst-CICM, 4651 N. 25th St. Arlington, VA 22207. Arrangements by:
