SEPTEMBER 2, 1922 - AUGUST 16, 2014
Manda Winifred Gates, age 91 of San Antonio, TX passed away Saturday morning, August 16, 2014 in the presence of Heart to Heart Hospice. She was born in Clifton, Oregon on September 2, 1922. She graduated from San Pedro High School, California, and the University of Portland, Oregon with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Magna Cum Laude, before commissioning as an Ensign in the US Navy Nurses Corp 1945. In 1947, she married Doyle Edward Gates. After discharge from the Navy, Manda worked as a nurse in hospitals and doctor offices in Texas and California. She spent the majority of her time, energy, and efforts lovingly raising her seven children. She was a great mother, grandmother, and friend to many, who will be dearly missed. She was active in her faith participating in various parish organizations at St. John Vianney in Kailua, Hawaii and St. Mark the Evangelist in San Antonio, Texas. She was excellent at knitting, making colorful Christmas stockings for all her children, sons-in-laws, daughters-in-laws, and grandchildren. She was also an avid stamp collector, with an extensive collection of stamps from around the world. She enjoyed cooking, and loved good food, especially cioppino, shrimp, calamari, and baby-back ribs! She also was an avid Spurs fan, and was glad that they won the championship this year. Go Spurs Go! Preceding her in death were her husband of 66 years Doyle Gates; mother, Jacobina Millitch; father, George Brajcich, and brothers, Prosper Brajcich and Jack Brajcich. She is survived by Stephen and Barbara Gates of Floresville, TX, Barbara and Joseph Smith of Christchurch, New Zealand, Robert Gates of Midland, TX, Gary and Rae Gates of San Pedro, CA, Susan and Dwayne Clay of Macon, GA, Thomas and Martha Gates of San Antonio, TX, Patrick and Shirley Gates of Honolulu, HI; her beloved former daughter-in-law, Amy Gates of San Antonio, TX; fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
