Gloria Leal Aguilar, 76, passed away on August 5, 2010 after an extended and courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She shared her final moments at home peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.

Gloria Aguilar's bright smile, beautiful green eyes and gregarious personality filled the spirits of those she touched over her wonderful lifetime. Born in San Antonio, Texas, she spent her formative years travelling with her family as migrant workers from Texas to Michigan. She married Adolfo Aguilar, Sr. in 1953 and a year later, bundled her two month old son on a trek to Germany to join her husband who was serving in the U. S. Army. Upon returning to San Antonio, she balanced her life as wife, mother of three and a career filled with dedication and success.

Her entrepreneurial spirit and success was featured in the San Antonio Express-News "Dedication Rewarded" column written by Veronica Salazar. She was the owner of Gloria's Cake Shop and shared her cake decorating talents as a teacher and salesperson at JC Penney for many years. She also spent several years at Market Square as a salesperson and unofficial greeter to thousands of tourists visiting San Antonio.

She was a vehement supporter of education and encouraged her children and grandchildren through all stages of their education. "You can be whatever you want to be, through a good education", she extolled to her children. And we believed her. She was a proud member of her community and continued to vote well into her confinement.

Mom, you made us proud of who we are and where we came from. It is your spirit of aspiration to succeed that is your legacy, which lives on in all of us.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Adolfo Aguilar, Sr., son, Adolfo Aguilar, Jr., and spouse, Gisela Girard, daughters, Arlene Aguilar, Evelynn Aguilar-Bailey and spouse, David John Bailey. Her grandchildren include; Michael Martinez, Marcus Martinez and spouse Erin Martinez, grand daughter, Carly John Bailey and great-grandson, Isaiah Martinez. She is also survived by her brother Jim Leal, Jr. and partner Hilda Neira, sisters, Olga Sutherland, Dora Uriegas and spouse, Joe Uriegas, sister in laws Adela Aguilar and Lupe Lopez, brother-in-law Ernesto Aguilar and spouse Josie Aguilar and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her father, Jim Leal, Sr., mother, Concepcion Jimenez-Leal and beloved aunt Maria Torres.

Many thanks to Dr. James Wilder, his nurse Michelle and staff for the quality of care and precious time that was afforded the family after her initial diagnosis.
