Sister Elizabeth McCullough, a Sister of Divine Providence, entered eternal life at the age of 89 on December 20, 2010. Daughter of Hugh Thomas and Stella Elizabeth Fife McCullough, she was born in San Antonio, Texas, November 23, 1921. Growing up in the city, she graduated from St. Mary's High School and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Divine Providence, making her first profession of vows at age 20. Sister Elizabeth touched many lives through various ministries. She was principal and teacher in parochial and congregational schools in Texas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma and art instructor at Our Lady of the Lake College. In 1961 she became Supervisor of Instruction for the Archdiocese of San Antonio, and in 1964 she became Regional Superior for the Congregation's Western Region. Elected Superior General in 1967, Sister Elizabeth became the major leader of more than 730 Sisters ministering in various states and in Mexico. During her term she implemented the directives of Vatican II and served as Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Our Lady of the Lake College. After her term Sister continued her congregational service as Coordinator at Regan Hall and then served as a teacher at St. Cecilia School in the city and as an English instructor at Our Lady of the Lake University. Later she entered parochial ministry at Assumption Parish, Ganado, Texas. Sister Elizabeth maintained that her most challenging and gratifying ministry was as Procurator Advocate in the Marriage Tribunal of the Archdiocese of San Antonio from 1986-1993. In that role, she prepared and presented thousands of cases-petitions for annulment to the Church Court (Tribunal). Sister Elizabeth is survived by Joseph Vincent and Jean McCullough, her brother and sister-in-law, of Corpus Christi and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Hugh Thomas and John Patrick McCullough. A Memorial Mass will be held on January 3, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent, 515 S.W. 24th Street, San Antonio, TX 78207-4619.
