Jane Brough Benson, loving mother and sister, passed away in San Francisco a few days after joyously celebrating her 93rd birthday with her children and loved ones. Daughter of Ethel Holmgreen Brough and Robert Bruce Brough of San Antonio, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from American University and was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority. She married William Randolph Benson III ('Ben') in 1940, and they were married for 48 years until his death in 1988. Jane was a long time resident of North Dallas and a founding member of Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist in Dallas until moving to San Francisco in 2006 to be close to her son and daughter. Active in the Church, she was a faithful follower of the teachings of Mary Baker Eddy. Pursuing an enduring passion for history and genealogy, she wrote "The Holmgreens and the Alamo Iron Works" and presented it to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library. An especially ardent bird watcher, she was a member of Audubon and of the 'Paisanos.' She is survived by her son William Randolph Benson IV ('Randy') and his spouse Donna of Los Angeles; her daughter Ann Benson and Ann's spouse Iris Harrell of Portola Valley, California; her grandson Jesse Hart Benson and Jesse's wife Benett Rogers; her great-grandson Julian Hart Mackenzie Benson of Los Angeles; and her brother William W. Brough and his spouse Diana of Barrington, Illinois. Jane provided gentle mentoring and support to family members and people she met; many people have benefited from her generosity and encouragement. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Habitat for Humanity or Heifer International. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
