John Warren Elley, born November 22, 1928, beloved husband, father, devoted grandfather and great grandfather, was called home by our heavenly Father on June 23, 2011. Mr. Elley is preceded in death by his loving wife of 45 years, Anna V. Elley, and daughter, Kathryn Velten. He leaves to cherish his memories of unwavering faith, devotion to God and unconditional love, his child, Marilyn Leist and husband, Stephen, sisters, Lucille Smiley(Tom), Mary Dozier (Earl), Clarice Bauereis, Roselie Philips, and Betty Jean Caples, grandchildren: Scott Hodge, Anita Hodge, Franklin Hodge, Michael Hodge and families, Stephen Leist Jr., Roxanne Leist, Sherry Leist and families; 19 great grandchildren. Mr. Elley graduated from South San High School in 1947. He served during the Korean War in the US Army's 224th Infantry Regiment. He had a long-lasting career of 38 years with civil service. Mr. Elley possessed a thirst for knowledge that continued throughout his life, earning him numerous certificates and recognition. He was an avid bowler and fisherman, as well as a dedicated Boy Scout volunteer. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the VFW Post 2059, 3202 Ackerman Rd., Kirby, Texas 78219. Visitation will begin Thursday, June 30, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 1, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment with full military honors will follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. As a loving tribute to Mr. Elley, his pallbearers will be wearing suspenders which were his trademark accessory. For personal acknowledgment you may sign the guest book at in the obituary section.
