Esther Hines Wray, 100, of San Antonio, died in her sleep on November 29, 2011. She was born as Esther Johnson Hines in Birmingham, Alabama, on February 21, 1911, daughter of Maxwell Alexander Hines and Mollie Eugenia (Holt) Hines. She completed her education in the 1930s in interior design at the Parsons New School for Design in New York City. In 1932 she married Stanley Tanner Wray, of Muncie, Indiana. During their marriage they lived in many places, with memorable stops in the Panama Canal Zone, post-war Germany, Dayton (OH), Alexandria (VA), Fort Walton Beach (FL), and finally San Antonio. Esther leaves her family and friends memories of her great sense of style, love of small dogs, her needlepoint, and family gatherings at the beach. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maj. Gen. Stanley Tanner Wray, and oldest son Stanley Tanner Wray, Jr. She is survived by sons Mack Wray (Hillary), Edwin Wray, and Richard Wray (Sue), grandchildren Stanley Tanner Wray, III (Karl Debus-López), Tina van Roggen (Walter), Valerie Sandberg (Dan), and Jessica Wray, and 5 great grandchildren.
