Catharine Hill (Cathy) Garrett Obituary
Catharine Hill (Cathy) Garrett went home to be with her Lord on April 18, 2012. Preceding her in death were her husband, Charles Edward Garrett, Sr.; her parents, John Rutledge Hill and Catharine Scarborough Hill; her son, Charles Edward Garrett, Jr.; and her brother, John Rutledge Hill, Jr. Born in Dallas, December 31, 1927, Cathy attended the Armstrong School and graduated in 1945 from Highland Park High School in Dallas. In 1947, she was valedictorian of her graduating class at Monticello Junior College in Godfrey, IL. Continuing her higher education, Cathy became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority while majoring in English Literature at the University of Texas in Austin. She graduated from UT in 1950 and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While at UT, Cathy met the love of her life, Charlie Garrett, a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, on a blind date in January 1948. They married March 5, 1949, in Dallas, and honeymooned in Acapulco. They moved to San Antonio, Charlie's hometown, where he started a home building business. The couple reared eight children together and enjoyed many happy times with them during school and vacation activities through the years. Cathy was an exemplary wife and mother, who created a home distinguished by its warmth and happiness. Her marriage with Charlie lasted 41 years until Charlie's death in 1990, and the romance remained strong and vibrant throughout. Her greatest pride was her eight children, 14 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren who looked forward to Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas family gathering around her dinner table and frequent summer days around her swimming pool. Cathy and her family were active members ,first at St. Peter Prince of the Apostles Catholic Church during their early years together and since 1961 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Later in life, Cathy became a member of the Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. Cathy was a Eucharistic minister and participated in Perpetual Adoration at St. Pius X parish for many years. She also was active in the Sacred Heart Guild, St. Monica Guild, Empress Candle Garden Club, Gibbons Literary Guild, Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae and Needlepoint Club. Survivors include her children and their spouses, Kay Parker (Michael), Carolyn Garrett, Bob Garrett (Jayne), Betsy Estrada (Rei) and Patty Verette (Bob), all of San Antonio; Bill Garrett of Dallas; and John Garrett of Austin; grandchildren, Joey, Andrew, Katy, Mary Clare, and Angela Parker; Nikki Wuertz, Courtney Ward, and Holly Travis; Ryan Garrett, Lauren and Caitlin Bryant; Brian, Thomas and Emily Garrett; and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Friday, April 27, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church 3303 Urban Crest, 78209, with a rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2012 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Guardian Angel program at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3303 Urban Crest San Antonio, TX 78209-3199.
