Jesus (Jesse) Herrera born on July 21, 1926, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the age of 86. He is survived by his daughter, Julie Herrera; granddaughters Ariana and Attica; sisters Amelia Villarreal and Lupe Weaver; brother Eduardo Herrera; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Valentin and Manuela V. Herrera; brothers, Ernest V. and Eleodoro Herrera; and sister, Mary Garcia. Jesse is a veteran of WWII, where he earned several medals including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star with "V" for Valor, and Presidential Unit Citation with Star. At the age of 16, he was determined to serve his country but underage, so he fibbed about his age, and was accepted into the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Pharmacist's Mate First Class. He was then drafted into the Marines and sent to Field Medical School. He served in the 3rd Platoon of Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, of the 1st Marine Division, part of the 10th Army that invaded Okinawa. Jesse was a student at Trinity University and a graduate from St. Mary's University with a BA Degree in English. He taught various levels of English, including ESL. He worked at Kelly AFB from 1951-1963, was assistant housing planning officer for the City of San Antonio from 1972-74. As a devoted civic leader, he donated his time and expertise to the San Antonio Planning & Zoning Commission and San Antonio Zoning Board of Adjustment. He also received the honor of being appointed by President Richard M. Nixon to the Selective Service System and by former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe to the Texas State Board of Education. He also served as a Bexar County Constable. For 42 years, he managed the Park South Village Apartments. Jesse was a strong Democrat political supporter, member of several organizations, and very active in the community. Above all, he was a believer and had a strong faith in Jesus Christ. The family is grateful to the RN's, LVN's and CNA's at Town & Country Manor, Boerne, TX and the VA Hospital, who followed his care throughout the last few years. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 14th from 10:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
