Fred Grohman Obituary

GROHMAN
Fred Grohman, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 25, 2012. Fred Grohman, Jr, born April 16, 1927 in String Prairie, Texas. He graduated from Brackenridge High School, 1944. He joined the US Navy immediately and served in the South Pacific on several ships. His ship was also involved in one of the worst typhoons that area had ever experienced. Fred retired in 1982, after 32 from his career with the Air Force Logistics Command at Kelly AFB, TX. He began working in various Maintenance Division jobs in 1950 including driving the tow vehicles to move planes around, working inside small spaces on C130's, C-5, etc. He was accepted into the 2 year Apprentice Training Aircraft Mechanic program, graduating in 1954 and awarded the Outstanding Apprentice award. His first day after this honor, he was contacted to work various Special Projects that earned him very high esteem from all his supervisors. He worked with the High Dollar items and then saved the Air Force several hundreds of thousands of dollars before moving into various management positions. Fred was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Award, by General Jack Catton. This was for his excellence in managing the F5 Project Peace Hawk program through 1973. He continued to manage this billion dollar program until 1978, with over 20 round trips overseas, and to Washington, D C where he made countless presentations to all levels of officers there. He also worked with Northrup Aviation Corporation in California with high level decision concerning all aspects of that plane's production. After retiring, Dr John Hagee of Cornerstone Church asked him to work with the church. Fred helped him initiate the Night to Honor Israel program. The church has continued this program locally & nationally very successfully for 30 years. He also managed the pastor's new TV ministry then, which has also been produced for over 30 years. Meanwhile, he began 95% of the construction of a new home in Spring Branch where they lived for about 14 years. One of his accomplishments there was laying some 7000 bricks for extensive walkways, porches etc. In 2007, they moved to Independence Village due to Fred's health issues. On December 23, 2011, they moved w/in a few blocks of the home they'd lived in over 30 years, raising their 7 daughters.
Mr. Grohman was preceded in death by Mary Francis Grohman (17 years), his parents, Fred and Hattie Mary Grohman and his brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Betty Grohman. I also wanted to share one of my favorite stories about grampa since I wasn't able to get it written in time for the service. When I started working in the country music business in Nashville , Grampa was incredibly proud. I knew he loved music, so I wanted to give him a chance to learn about it from the inside. I asked him and Grammy to come down to Music Row & have lunch with me and one of the Christian music songwriters that I knew. I expected Grampa to come down wearing his usual blue jumpsuit & cowboy boots - I had even told my co-workers that he always wore that 'uniform' & they were all looking forward to seeing this unusual combination of clothing.
So, I was surprised when he arrived wearing his Sunday best, hair combed, shoes shined. He was literally beaming with pride during the tour of our offices, talking with the staff, and looking at the gold & platinum records on the walls of the office. The songwriter that accompanied us to lunch, Don Poythress, was an incredibly good sport as he answered all of Grampa's questions about the business and listened with great interest to his stories. It was a very sweet moment. On that same trip, I also took Grammy and Grampa to the Country Music Hall of Fame where we read every.single.sign/plaque/exhibit from one end of the building to the other, only stopping to listen to Grampa's stories in between. I always felt that my work in the music business became something kindred between us and I loved being able to share that with him & feel his pride for me through it. For my 31st birthday, Grampa had one of his own portable record players restored for me. I remember being told that he had to drive all the way across town to replace the needle on the player. I felt so special knowing that he did that just for me. I am very proud of it & the records that he gave me from his personal collection to go along with it.

As a young couple starting out, Fred was such a blessing to us. Johnny and I recall once when we had a car with almost no brakes. We cldnt even afford a brake job and Fred came to the rescue. I remember him working on that car in his driveway in harmony hills w/ a lantern/flashlight til about midnight and at the end saying " Johnny, this brake job should last you the life of this car!" Seeing as how the car was at least 15-20 yrs old, it did! Also he was so generous to us, trusting us to take his RV! The words that come to mind when I think of Fred are generous, kind, gentle, soft spoken, loving. So glad to have known him. What an example! Much love, Johnny and Lestra

The Best Grandfather ANYONE could ask for. He will never be forgotten and will always be our Christmas angel. His love for the Lord was unmatchable and he always set a good example for everyone. His faith made each of us better, and his love made our family stong. Never forgotten, and always our guardian angel!
