Mrs. Emma Cruz, born October 30th, 1912, passed away quietly at her home on March 7th with her son Fred at her side. She was 100 years old. Mrs. Cruz was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Cruz Sr. She is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Anthony (Tony Jr) and Mary Jane Cruz; Frederico (Fred) Cruz and Daniel (Danny) and Edna Cruz; her nieces and nephews, Emmita Mendez Puente, David Mendez and Delores (Dee) Mendez; grandchildren: Alexis Nicole Cruz and Tammy Mada, and 7 great grandchildren. Mrs. Cruz was a lifelong resident of the city. A devoted homemaker, Emma tended to and nurtured the extended family which included her own mother until her passing. Stricken with glaucoma in middle age she eventually lost all her sight, but maintained her determined and independent character, living with her son Fred but traveling to Washington DC to visit family. She was also a cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1998 and despite her advanced age, underwent the prescribed treatment and was cancer free at the time of her death. Blessed with a warm charm and style, most that met her were unaware of either her advanced age or her visual disability. She continued to travel throughout the city to visit her family up until very recently. She was a member of both Our Lady of Guadalupe and San Juan de los Lagos Parishes. Her husband, Tony Cruz, was a successful businessman who owned a string of shoe shine parlors in the 50's and 60's, and later, Tony's Mexican Restaurant on Houston Street opposite the Texas Theater. He was active in both the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and LULAC Council #2. Visitation will begin on Tuesday at 5:00 P.M. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. at the Angelus Chapel. Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow in San Fernando Archdiocesan Cemetery # 2. Condolences may be sent to the Cruz family at www.theangelusfuneralhome.com. Arrangements by:
