Travis Crowther Obituary
Travis Poole Crowther, born on April 12, 1929, in San Antonio, Texas, passed away at his home in San Antonio on Tuesday, March 12, 2003, at the age of 83. "Poole" was the eldest son of Maj Gen A.B. Crowther and Ethel Poole Crowther of San Antonio. He attended high school in Cotulla, Texas, while his father was fighting with the 36th Infantry Division during WWII in North Africa and Europe. He learned ranching from his grandfather, La Salle County Sheriff Travis Hogue Poole, and his uncle, Hogue Poole, the old school way - from the saddle of a horse. Following his graduation from Cotulla High School, he attended college at Texas A&I. He followed his grandfather and uncle in the ranching business until the 1950's south Texas drought forced him to sell out. On July 25, 1953, the Cotulla cowboy married the love of his life, a Laredo school teacher, Jane Walsh, and together they had two sons. Poole also followed his father's service as an artillery officer in the Texas National Guard and went on to pursue an active duty career in the US Army and saw the world and more. His Army service included overseas assignments in Hawaii, West Germany, and two tours (1963-1964 and 1969-1970) in South Vietnam. He retired from active duty as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1975 after 27 years of service. Among his military awards were the Bronze Star medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, and Liaison Pilot Wings. After his military career Poole was active in his community and was a member of numerous organizations including the Conopus Club, the Jamestowne Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the 36th Division Association, the Military Officers Association of America, the Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion. Poole is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, A.B. (Bert) Crowther, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Walsh Crowther; son, James B. (J.B.) Crowther, Lt Col, USA (ret), daughter-in-law, Valerie B. Crowther, and granddaughter, Elizabeth Jane Crowther; and son, Richard Poole Crowther, and grandson, Travis Poole Crowther II.
