August Bowling Smith, 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013, following a brief illness in a San Antonio hospital.
Born March 24, 1929 in Jourdanton, Texas, to Joseph and Donna Steinle Smith, August was a humble man who enjoyed a full and rewarding life. He grew up in South Texas, attended Texas Tech University where he graduated in 1950 with a BA in Business Administration, and later earned a Master's Degree in Marketing from North Texas State University; however, he always considered Texas Tech to be his true Alma Mater.
August served and retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in the United States Navy on the USS Eisenhower, and then served in the U.S. Naval Reserve as well as the Civil Air Patrol. He later continued another career as Sales Engineer for various electronic component manufacturers throughout Texas and Mexico.
August was a philanthropic man who supported a wide range of nonprofit organizations (including two favorites: Cal Farley's Boys Ranch and the Admiral Nimitz Foundation benefitting the National Museum of the Pacific War), was an avid stamp collector; navigated around the San Antonio skies in small aircraft; loved spending time with church friends; and enjoyed traveling with his wife Lorene, listening to beautiful organ music, and exchanging war stories with other retired veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Lorene Reitzer-Smith of San Antonio; sons Kelly Neal Smith (wife Karen) of Lubbock, Gordon Keith Smith of Dallas, Gerald Alan Smith of Austin, and Kraig Bowling Smith of Oklahoma City; step-sons Randy Hollon (wife Paula), and Keith Hollon (wife Gayle Reynolds); grandchildren Kristopher Neal Smith of Lubbock and Kathryn Mira Smith of Glenns Ferry, Idaho; Lorene's children: Joel V. Reitzer, Jr. (wife Judith) of Durham, North Carolina, and Paulette N. Graves (husband Vannie) of Kerrville, as well as a host of extended family and many, many church friends.
A visitation will be held at First Church of the Nazarene (10715 West Avenue, San Antonio 78123) from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 11; a memorial service in witness to the Resurrection and in celebration of August's life, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12 in the sanctuary of First Church of the Nazarene, with Reverand Matt Rice officiating. Interment will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, at Jourdanton City Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Hurley Funeral Home of Pleasanton, Texas.
