Mary Herring was born as Mary Ecile Underwood on April 19, 1923 in Sebastopol, Mississippi. She passed away peacefully on June 29, 2013. Mary graduated from Sebastopol High School in 1940 and attended Clark College in Newton, Mississippi, where she met Robert L. Herring. They married on April 7, 1941 and moved to Texas. She attended Hardin-Simmons University and graduated from Texas Christian University in 1947. She earned her Master's Degree in Education from East Texas State University in 1967. Mary taught public school for 34 years, primarily in the Mesquite ISD and was an inspiration to her many students through her tenure. A member of First Baptist Church of San Antonio, she was always active in her church and was the first president of the Women's Club of Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas. Other involvement included president of the Ladies of the Ribbon, a spousal organization of the Military Order of World Wars and the Fair Oaks Ranch Garden Club. Survivors include her husband of 72 years, Brig. General Robert L. Herring; her daughter, Cindy Bates Muir; granddaughter, Lauren Bates in Dallas; brother, Tom Underwood; and nephew, Tommy Underwood, both of Sebastopol, Mississippi. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at Porter Loring Mortuary North.
