PEREZ
Sr. Teresa Perez, STJ, beloved member of the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus, died peacefully at the age of 80 on September 25, 2013, after an extended illness. Born on November 16, 1932 in the town of Arandas, (Jalisco, Mexico), the first of eight children, she is survived by two brothers, three sisters, and many nieces and nephews, some of whom were able to visit her in recent years. In 1957, at age 24, Sr. Teresa entered the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus, and three years later came to the United States, where she ministered in Texas and Louisiana for the rest of her life. She received her B.A. in Elementary Education at Incarnate Word College and her M.A. in Theology at St. Mary's University, both in San Antonio, Texas. Sr. Teresa was an excellent elementary school educator whose career spanned 37 years. In 1961, she helped with the foundation of the convent in Raceland, Louisiana and taught Kindergarten at St. Mary's Nativity until 1966, when she moved to St. Teresa's Academy, San Antonio to teach Kindergarten for three years. From 1971 to 1975, Sr. Teresa directed the Novices and Juniors in San Antonio. She studied in Rome for a semester, and then served at Sacred Heart in Uvalde, Texas as Superior and Pre-Kindergarten teacher. From 1979-1983, she taught 1st Grade at St. Matthew the Apostle in River Ridge, Louisiana, then 2nd Grade at St. Louis Cathedral School in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1983-1988. For a brief time, Sr. Teresa served the community at a variety of tasks, then returned to teach 3rd Grade at Our Lady of Lourdes in Slidell, LA from 1991-1994 and part-time at the Cathedral School for another four years until her retirement in 1998. In 2005, after the devastation of Katrina, she transferred to St. Teresa's convent in San Antonio. Always an exceptional seamstress, Sr. Teresa dedicated many hours to sewing for the Teresian boutique and other projects until her illness kept her bedridden. She lived the last five months of her life at St. Francis Nursing Home in San Antonio where she received excellent skilled care from the caring Sisters and staff there. May the Lord bless Sr. Teresa for her untiring dedication and faithfulness in His service. We will miss her. Services will be held on Friday, September 27 at the Angelus Funeral Home, with the Rosary at 9:30 AM and Mass at 10:00, followed by interment at San Fernando Cemetery # 2. Arrangements by:
