MYERS
Lt. Gen. Paul W. Myers, M.D. (USAF-Ret) age 90, of Air Force Village II, San Antonio, TX, went to be with his Lord on Nov. 25, 2013. Gen. Myers was born Jan. 15, 1923 in Schenectady, NY. He attended Union College and later Albany Medical College in Albany, NY where he received his doctorate of Medicine in 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in June 1943 and served until 1945. He returned to active military duty as a commissioned officer in July 1949 and was assigned to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY. His general surgery residency was completed at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady and his neurosurgery residency at Albany Medical Center in Albany. He was assigned to the 2349th U.S. Air Force Hospital at Parks AFB, Calif. as chief of the Neurosurgery Service. In 1958 he became director of neurological surgery at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland AFB, TX. In April 1971, he was appointed commander of Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center and held that position until Aug. 1978 when he became Surgeon General of the Air Force. Gen. Myers was a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Military Neurosurgical Society of America, Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons, Southern Neurosurgical Society, American Medical Association, Pan American Medical Association, Association of Neurological Surgeons and the San Antonio Surgical Society He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He was also a member of the land-based medical recovery forces of Project Mercury and participated in the post-flight medical debriefing of the astronauts. He authored and co-authored numerous professional articles. He became a member of Alpha Omega Alpha in 1966 and and received the Alumni Honorary Award in 1973. His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award ribbon with oak leaf cluster and the honor decoration for the Causa de la Fuerza de Chile. He retired from the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 1, 1983. He is preceded in death by his parents Roy F. Myers and Ruth Mott Myers; his sister, Harriett Myers; and his wife, Virginia Carman Myers. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Anderson Myers; children, Peter Paul Myers, Joan Myers Carter, Debra Myers Lawrence, Michelle Myers (James Patrick) Biasiolli, Stephen John (Cheryl Lynn) Anderson and Janel Judith (Col. Kevin Michael) Mulvihill; brother, Roy (Meryl) Myers; 9 grandchildren, Amanda (Brent) Wells, Gina Biasiolli, Travis (Madeline) Biasiolli, Samantha (Philip) Turturro, Shannon Anderson, Kyle Anderson, Lauren Anderson, Marie Mulvihill and Elizabeth Mulvihill; 9 great grandchildren and "one on the way". Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home in Castroville, TX from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m, with the Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at St. Louis Catholic Church in Castroville, TX at 11:00 a.m. Interment with Full Military Honors will be held on Monday, Dec. 2, 2013 at 10:15 a.m. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Air Force Village Charitable Foundation. Arrangements by Tondre-Guinn Funeral Home.
