Heston Gumm Obituary
Major Heston Ray Gumm died peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the age of 91 years. He was born May 15, 1922 in McMillan, Oklahoma. Heston Ray is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Alice Faye Gumm and children, Heston Ray Gumm, Jr. (Barbara), Daniel Alpern (Vicki), Michael Alpern (Jeannine) and Trisha Gumm Ramirez (Tony). Heston Ray was preceded in death by one son, Timothy Alpern. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Jason (Tammie), Amy (Ben), Shaun (Melinda), Staci (Jason), Megan (Ben), Ani (Amon), Stephanie (Alexander); 7 great-grandchildren, Logan Cole, Landon Ray, James Daniel, Jack Heston, Lily Faye, George Colin and Asher Lee; and sister, Bettie Saunders. Major Heston Ray Gumm was a proud American and veteran. His military career began in 1939 in Oklahoma with the Army Air Corps and then with the United States Air Force. He was an aviator and aviation training instructor. After he retired in 1965, he completed his Masters Degree in World History at St. Mary's University in San Antonio, TX. Upon graduation, he began his "second" career as an educator. He taught at John Marshall High School from 1967-1991 and continued as a substitute teacher at John Marshall High School exclusively until 2001. He was an educator until the age of 80 years old. Heston Ray was an amazing role model and leader. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather. He had an unparalleled sense of humor. Everyone looked forward to spending time with him because we knew there would be laughter. We will miss his jokes, his laugh, and his beaming smile. His grandchildren have fond memories of long walks holding hands to see the "Great Wall of China" in the park, but the best memories are the "top of the head sugars" (kisses) that he gave them when they saw him. Heston Ray's family and friends will celebrate his life Friday, December 27, 2013 with visitation from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Porter Loring North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78232.
