Adele Bordiga, 97, passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of January 14, 2014. A resident of San Antonio since 1970, Adele was married to Colonel Carl Bordiga, who preceded her in death in 2008. A devoted housewife and mother, Adele was known for her warmth and kindness, as well as her ceaseless optimism and cheerful nature.
Adele was born May 11, 1916, to Peter and Blanche Payavis in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania, and grew up in that bustling coal mining town. Being a natural beauty, she was crowned Miss Edwardsville 1932. She was also a talented visual artist, winning a local art contest in 1934 with her detailed charcoal portrait of President Herbert Hoover. The portrait earned many accolades, culminating with the president himself providing his signature to the work upon its presentation to him the same year. As her talent matured, she studied with noted professionals at a prestigious New York City art school.
She furthered her education by receiving a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania in 1939. Heeding the call of her country, she became an Army field nurse in 1942, achieving the rank of first lieutenant. She served with honor and distinction in India, where she met the love of her life, Carl, who was also serving his country there as an Army Engineer. After their marriage in 1946, she became a devoted wife and mother to her three children.
Adele is survived by her daughter Stella (Bob) Morehead, her two sons, Peter (Patty) and Michael (Ann), and five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren. A rosary will be held for her at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Wednesday, January 22, at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held the following morning on January 23 at 10:15 AM. After the mass she will be interred alongside her husband at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:30 AM.
The Bordiga family would like to especially thank Cindy Kuhn and Idella Sherifee, who provided years of vigilant personal care to Adele through her final hour, and to Bill Kriz, for his dedicated executorship of the Bordiga estate.
A reception will follow interment at St. Pius X Catholic Church Family Center.
