Mary Louise Collins Obituary

Mary Louise Collins went to her eternal reward on May 16, 2014, as she passed away peacefully at the age of 90. A native San Antonian, she was born to Joe R. and Arcadia M. Garza on April 26, 1924, and grew up in their loving home on the city's South Side. Although she was an only child, she was surrounded by a large extended family of cousins and dear family friends who were like brothers and sisters to her. She attended Graebner Middle School and graduated from Luther Burbank High School in 1942. While at Burbank, Mary was elected captain of the drill team and president of the homemaker's club. After graduation, she obtained a job she loved and made many dear friends working in a civil service position at Randolph Air Force Base. After fellow Burbank classmate Morris Collins returned home from serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II, the two resumed a relationship and were wed at St. Leo's Catholic Church in San Antonio on April 13, 1947. Morris' first career as a commercial sailor and then with the U.S. Navy, where he served as Captain during the Korean War, often left them apart, but she traveled to meet him each time he came into port and was very active with her job and activities with family and friends. After Morris finished law school and began a second career as an attorney, he and Mary happily adopted six-month-old twin boys from Germany, Michael and Martin. Mary left her job of 18 years at Randolph AFB to care for the boys that she and Morris both called the greatest blessing of their lives. Her new role kept her more active than ever, as she was a loving and devoted mother; a true friend to all who knew her, always thinking of kind ways to reach out to others; and an active member of Blessed Sacrament Parish, where she was a member of the Altar Society. In her later years, she volunteered with Meals on Wheels; engaged in many activities with Blessed Sacrament Church and its VSP group, including countless hours helping with crafting for the group's fundraisers; and enjoyed time with her grandsons, of whom she was very proud. She is predeceased by her parents and by her husband, Morris, who passed away in 2006. She is survived by her son Michael J. Collins and his sons, Joshua, Noah, and Elisha; son Martin J. Collins and his wife, Julie; sisters-in-law Hazel Bernhard and Maxine Smith; nephew Jeff Smith; and many beloved cousins and friends. The family would like to express its thanks to Dr. Joseph Gonzales, Dr. Tan Vatanadilok, and the staff at Regent Care Center on Medical Drive for all of the care and support they provided in recent years, and to the team with Optum Hospice, who were so kind to her in her last days. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough.
