Walter Minchew Obituary

MINCHEW

Walter Joseph Minchew, Jr. passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2014 in Lubbock, Texas. A private memorial ceremony for his immediate family was held Friday, June 27th. Cremation with confidence is under the direction of Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers, Lubbock. You may share your tribute to Walt at www.memorialdesigners.net.

Walt was born October 1, 1944 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. He grew up in Rocky Mount and graduated from Benvenue High School and attended the University of Maryland. Deciding to follow his lifelong dream to travel the world, Walt joined the Air Force and would spend 30 years serving his country.

While stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro, NC, Walt met and married Virginia French, the love of his life. His career would take them all over the world.

Everyone who knew Walt remember his quick wit and personality. He loved music, especially classic country and rock and roll and was often seen dancing to his favorite tunes. But Walt was never happier than when he was on a golf course or with his family. His greatest joys were his daughter Donna and granddaughter Rachel.

Those left to cherish memories of Walt are his wife and best friend, Ginni; daughter Donna and husband Robert Giovannetti of Lubbock, Texas and granddaughter Rachel. He is also survived by his sister Charlotte and her husband Lonnie Shearin and sister Joann Carpenter of Rocky Mount, North Carolina a sister in law, Bernadette Cook of Goldsboro, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Edna Minchew.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lubbock Meals on Wheels, 2304 34th Street, Lubbock, TX 79411.

Dear Ginni and family,
We were saddened today to hear of Walt's passing. Walt was my boss while stationed at Kunia. He, more than any other leader I've had, taught me integrity, thoroughness, and the importance of accuracy. I recall countless times when he returned a report or product of mine, with instructions to type it again--this time with no errors. While using the old "selectric" typewriter, he often commented that I could type faster backwards (with the correction key) than I could forwards.
After Hawaii, Walt personally obtained a signed "letter of recommendation" from the local 2-star General which no-doubt sealed my selection to Officer Training School (I am 100% certain, Walt authored and wrote the letter himself, then tricked the General into signing it...perhaps he let the General win a game of golf).
That was a long time ago---but often seems like yesterday.
On behalf of Alex and I, please know we are saddened today--but delighted by the memories.
p.s. I remember when he 1st began to play golf...sadly, that was a skill he did not teach me...

We attended Benvenue High School with W.J. and have very special, fun memories. He was always smiling and had a good time whatever we were doing trying to get out of high school. We know you will have many happy memories to get you through these tough times. He left this world way too soon!!

Virginia,

We are so very sad for the loss of Walt. Our prayers are with you, Donna, and Rachel. We will always hold on to the special memories in our hearts. I will never forget the sweet little sticky notes with packs of Trident gum that Walt would leave for us at BAMC and Leonard cherishes all of the awesome Dallas Cowboy ornaments...Walt was a very kind, sweet and funny person and will be in our hearts always. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
