Calvin Popp Obituary

May 2, 1936 - February 22, 2015

Lt. Col. (USAF Retired) Calvin Raymond Popp, age 78, of San Antonio passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015 at VITAS Inpatient Hospice in San Antonio, TX.
Lt. Col. Popp was born on May 2, 1936. In West, TX to Henry H. and Lois (Podsednik) Popp. He had one brother, Gary Eugene Popp. After graduating from West High School in 1954, he married his high school sweet heart Shelia Ruth Shieldes on May 25, 1957.
Lt. Col. Popp received his bachelor's degree from Baylor University where he was commissioned through the USAF ROTC program. He received a Master's degree in counseling from Ball State University. After 22 years of service, he retired at Kelly AFB in San Antonio, TX. His assignments included tours in Alaska, Germany and service in the Vietnam conflict. Lt. Col. Popp received multiple decorations including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, AF Commendation Medal, Joint Services Commendation Medal and Vietnam Gallantry Cross. After the Air Force he worked at Datapoint as well as Fairchild Aircraft.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Gary. He is survived by four sons and one daughter: Dr. David Popp and his wife Lani of San Antonio, Melissa Popp of San Antonio, Michael Popp and his wife Sarah of San Antonio, Mark Popp of Waco and Christopher Popp and his wide Sandra of Los Angeles; twelve grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Popp and his wife Sarah, Andrew Popp, Philip Popp and his wife Katherine, Hannah Popp, Rachel Popp, Tyler Quinn and his wife Julie, Montana Ramos and Shiloh Ramos, Jordan Popp, Caleb Popp, Christopher C. Popp and Deborah A. Popp; 5 great-grandchildren, Kara Popp, Kolette Popp, Gavin Quinn, Maddox Quinn and Keaston Quinn with another (Jude Parker Popp) expected in July, ex-wife Selah Rose, several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Services
Viewing and visitation with the family will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2015 at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North with a Funeral Service to begin at 9 a.m. Reverend Bruce Hammond will be officiating. Interment will immediately follow with Military Honors at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
