Obituary Condolences

January 20, 1944 - January 5, 2016
"Betty" Elizabeth Anderson Howe was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 20, 1944. She attended SAISD schools from the first through twelfth grades. After attending Smith Elementary and Japhet, she graduated from Highlands High School in 1961. She received a BS from Texas Women's University in 1965. The following year she completed certification in teacher education and library science from Our Lady of the Lake. Then in 1973 she completed a Master's degree in Communication Disorders with a specialization in Learning Disabilities. Her love of children brought her to SAISD where she began her assignment as a classroom teacher and school librarian at Japhet. During her time at Japhet she cared for physically handicapped children in grades one through twelve. She taught at Japhet for 20 years before spending 14 years at Collins Garden Elementary School. Despite her physical limitations, she earned a reputation as a fearless champion of the handicapped with lifelong service to all who needed her. She lived her life as an example in courage overcoming a handicap to achieve selfless and meaningful service to others. Her munificence to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church and her lifelong membership in the Little People of America are two examples of what guided her life. She will be remembered as a small lady with a mighty impact by everyone who has been privileged to know her. She loved her pets, including her cat Pattie, and when her health allowed, she loved to travel. She enjoyed Spurs games and playing Bunco. She gave generously to countless charities and volunteered at Samm's Ministries. She is preceded in death by her loving mother Marguerite Graves Anderson and her loving father Robert Anderson. She is survived by her stepdaughter Suzanne Saxon, step grandsons Joseph and Jacob Was, and cousins Jean Ratliff, Bill Carter and Jay Taylor. She will be missed dearly by her caregivers, the Odmark family, neighbors and everyone in her teaching career.

A viewing will be held at Mission Park Funeral Chapels South on January 11th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral Service will be celebrated at the same site on January 12th at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to Samm's Ministries, KLRN TV, or the Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
