My Wife Patti and I met Gen. Leavitt at a base reunion at the old Wurtsmith AFB in
Oscoda, Michigan. He was a wonderful man who shared a few stories with many of us. We talked about B-52H 0001 Bomber that was at our base. I told him this was the first B-52 I flew on and I picked it to be the first because it was called the State Of Michigan. It was the first H model made. Dick really shock my world when he told me he was the first pilot to fly it to Texas and then onto Wurtsmith AFB. I was blown away to know we fly on the same B-52H 0001. I guess we had something in common. He commanded respect for all he was. This world is a better place because you were here. God Speed my friend.

Remembering General Leavitt on this day
We struggle to find the words to say
Awards and decorations we all observe
Of a life dedicated to serve
Following the Flag, his recent book
Does provide an insightful look
At a life well lived until the end
Sadly, we say, God speed, our friend

General Leavitt was the best commander a young officer could ever hope to work for. Thanks for the memories. Rest in peace, sir.

I met Gen. Leavitt at a base reunion at the old Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan in 2009.We talked and he told me to call him Dick. We talked about Wurtsmith , Alpena and Michigan Football. I live very close to the place Dick grew up in the Alpena area.
I do have an autograph book that he wrote " Follow the Flag ". He was a great patriot, Airman and person!
