Bernard Bernal Obituary

May 24, 2016
Barney was born in San Antonio, Texas to Joe J. and Mary Esther Bernal. He is survived by both parents as well as his two brothers, Richard and Patrick (Elisa), and sister Rebecca (Robert). He is also survived by his 7 nephews and 1 niece. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1984, and attended Texas A&M University. He was an employee of AT&T for almost 20 years, most recently in Dallas, but was also part of the AT&T family in Austin and San Antonio.

Barney loved spending time with his family, whether it was sitting in the bleachers at the Fiesta parades yelling "show me your shoes!" or relaxing in a lawn chair at the beach. He had a sentimental side and loved being an uncle. When his nephews were born, he was there to welcome them and was always proud of their accomplishments, attending many of their events as they grew up. Barney was always very playful with kids, always trying to make them happy with a smile, joke, or silly comment.

Barney had a true passion for sports. He loved watching, competing in, and enjoying all sports and commentating on each. He avidly cheered on his Spurs, Aggies, and Cowboys. Barney was very competitive, especially when bowling, playing basketball, or even a video game. He loved hanging out with his friends, maintaining a close circle of buddies since childhood. He shared his joys and sorrows with these friends and will truly be missed by them.

On Saturday, May 28 at Mission Concepcion Church, a viewing will be held starting at 3:00pm, with a mass to be celebrated on Barney's behalf at 4:00pm.

Have worked with Barney since the Austin days. Quiet, dependable is how I would categorize him. Of course his addiction to sports would make him drop the quiet persona. Nothing like saying the Dallas Mavericks were the best basketball team in Texas to get a very energetic conversation going. He will be missed.

My deepest condolences to the Bernal family. I'm sure you have lost a very special part of your family. I worked w/Barney briefly while he was working in Austin with AT&T before he moved to Dallas. He was a sweet young man, very caring. One of the things I remember is that during the Halloween season - Barney would dress up as Chuckie -- he loved to make all of laugh with his great costume. God be with you during your time of loss.
