JAMES HOEY Obituary

HOEY III, JAMES DOUGLAS October 26, 1956 to December 22, 2012 James Douglas "Jim" Hoey III, a well-respected and loved San Diego trial attorney, died on December 22, 2012 after a fourteen-year battle with cancer. He was 56. Jim was the principal attorney for The Hoey Law Firm, which represented individuals who had been harmed due to the negligence of others. Jim was a passionate trial lawyer with a keen intellect and strategic vision. He strove to use these gifts, as well as his strong communication skills, to benefit others as a force for good. Jim was loved by all in the legal community-judges, mediators, defense attorneys, other trial lawyers, and expert witnesses. His presence will be sorely missed. Jim was born in Palo Alto, California on October 26, 1956. He was the baby of the family and only son-the "Golden Boy" to his mother and sisters. He was a gifted athlete, playing Quarterback on the Palo Alto High School football team. A testament to Jim's nature, the friendships Jim made during these early years lasted his lifetime. After high school, Jim went on to study at UC Davis and then UC Santa Barbara, where he earned his bachelor's degree. After graduating with honors from Hasting's School of Law, he moved to San Diego to practice law. Jim worked for several years as a defense attorney with the law firm of Lillick, McHose & Charles, where he was quickly promoted to Senior Associate because of his strong presence in the courtroom, his attention to detail, his strong work ethic, and his incredibly high standards. Jim left Lillick McHose in 1988 to start his own practice. In the years since, Jim litigated a wide variety of claims. What Jim consistently brought to the table was the same talents recognized at Lillick McHose-most notably his high standards, moral values, energy, and passion. Jim's passion led him to take, and win, cases that other lawyers would not touch. Jim hated to lose, and worked tirelessly for his clients. Jim's passion was not just seen in his legal practice. He brought that passion to literally every aspect of his life. A good friend once said of Jim: "The only time Jim sees moderation is when he is moving from one extreme to another." Jim never met a challenge he would not face head-on. From Club Champion at the Del Mar Country Club to Outstanding Trial Lawyer, once Jim set his sights on a goal, his vision never wavered. Jim's friendships ran deep. He made friends easily and kept them forever. Jim understood the value of friendship, and nurtured his friendships rather than taking them for granted. Above all else, Jim was passionate about his family. Jim's wife, kids, and extended family were his greatest source of joy. He quite literally put their lives before his own. The consummate family man, Jim was extremely active in his children's lives, coaching his son's football and baseball teams and rearranging his schedule to ensure he could be present at his children's games and activities. Because of his involvement and his obvious love for his children, Jim was also greatly loved and respected by all his children's friends. Jim began following Jesus in 2006 and grew tremendously in his faith over the following years. He was an active member of the Mission Church in Encinitas, and was mentored by David Menard, the Mission's Senior Pastor, from his first days as a Christian until his passing. Jim rose early every morning, and consistently spent the first hour of each day studying the Bible and praying, believing that his life's purpose was to "humbly serve our Lord" and to glorify Him in everything he did. Jim is survived by his loving wife Michelle Hubers-Hoey, his son Hunter, and daughters Hayden and Hailey, as well as his stepchildren Morgan and MJ Hubers. He is also survived by his mother Joyce Peters, sisters Kathleen Yamauchi and Janet Ghilarducci. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Mission Church, P.O. Box 230266, Encinitas, CA 92023. Services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at the North Coast Calvary Chapel, 1330 Poinsettia Lane, Carlsbad, California. The service is open to all.

I am so sorry for your loss. Jim was a great guy. I would speak to him often and got to know him when he moved into our building. He and Duke were inseparable and he was a wonderful friend and confidant. I will miss him greatly and it deeply saddens me that you have lost such a wonderful person. May God be with you during this difficult time. I know he was so looking forward to your trip.

I haven't seen Jim for maybe 27 years, but I am so sad. My wife and I worked with Jim at his first job out of law school. What a great guy. Basketball at USD at lunch, golf at Torrey Pines, and work- that was the Jim I remember.

I remember fondly playing basketball during lunch with Jim and Charlie Hoge in the late 1980's at USD. He was a great athlete and an even greater person.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Jim's family. I served as the mediator in many cases with Jim. He was an outstanding lawyer, a gentleman, a good man, and a fellow Gaucho. Jim's family should be proud of his life and accomplishments. I will miss him!
