Howard Lee "Red" Callahan

Callahan, Howard Lee "Red" Major, USMC (Ret) 10/17/1921 ~ 05/20/2013 OCEANSIDE -- Major Howard Lee "Red" Callahan, USMC (Ret.) passed away peacefully surrounded by three generations on May 20, 2013, at the age of 91. Callahan enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in his home town of Atlanta, Georgia, and was stationed at the U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He was assigned to the disbursing office, beginning a 32-year military career that included service during three wars. In 1944, Callahan served in World War II and was stationed at Nagasaki, Japan. In 1953, he was stationed in Seoul, Korea. In 1963, during the Vietnam War, Callahan was sent to Saigon in the Republic of South Vietnam as a Military Assistance Command Vietnam Advisor (MACV), beginning the first of his two tours. Callahan returned to Camp Pendleton, CA, and was promoted to the rank of Major in 1970, later retiring in 1974. Callahan who played golf throughout his life represented the U.S. Marine Corps in 1970 and won the All Marine Western Regional Golf Championship at MCB Camp Pendleton. Major Callahan also served as President of Pendleton Men's Golf Association. He served as past Commander of the Military Order of World Wars, and was member of the Marine Corps Mustang Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Marines' Memorial Association. The San Diego County Board of Supervisors recognized and honored Callahan for his outstanding service and leadership on his 90th birthday October 17, 2011, declaring "Major Howard Lee "Red" Callahan Day" throughout San Diego County. Callahan is survived by his wife of 30 years Wilma, his daughter Eileen and son John, grandsons John and Vincent, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 4, at Old Mission San Luis Rey, 4050 Mission Ave., Oceanside, CA. A funeral Mass will be held at the Mission Chapel at 10 a.m. followed by Interment with full Military Honors at the Mission Cemetery at 11 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Reception at the Parish Dining Hall.
