SYLVIA JEAN ALVARADO

ALVARADO, SYLVIA JEAN October 6, 1951 to May 1, 2011 Sylvia Jean Alvarado went home to Heaven on the Feast of Divine Mercy, May 1, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. She was a resident of Coronado for 15 years, serving as Director of Facilities for Sacred Heart Parish. Sylvia Jean was tireless in her goal to ensure that the church and school property were well maintained for parishioners and visitors alike. She would often be seen mowing lawns, painting, and maintaining church and school grounds with a pride and purpose to make them beautiful for her Gentle God. She was also a tremendous cook, preparing meals for the priests of the parish. A gifted auto mechanic, "Ace," as she was known to her friends, worked for many years in the Jeep division of American Motors. Recognized for her talent, she was promoted to the position of chief diagnostic technician. In this capacity, she was sent throughout the United States and other countries to teach mechanics how to repair and maintain Jeeps. It was during this time that she became part of the off-road racing circuit, competing in the Baja 500, Baja 1000, the World Cup Rally and various other off-road races. She was diagnosed with bone cancer one week before the Baja 1000 in 1989, yet still competed in the race, winning in her class. For the last 15 years, Sylvia Jean endeared herself to many with her innocence, simplicity and sense of humor. She became a fixture at Sacred Heart Parish and School, leaving lasting memories in all she encountered. A strong woman, she offered her suffering from the early stages of her cancer for the holiness of priests and others. She desired her suffering to be of spiritual benefit to those in need of prayers. The years she suffered with cancer, which she called the "race of a lifetime", were lived without complaining of the pain she experienced. A community celebration of the Rosary will be recited for Sylvia Jean on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church, located at 655 C Ave., Coronado, Calif. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. A private burial will be held at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sylvia Jean Alvarado Memorial Education Fund for Sacred Heart School, 655 C Ave., Coronado, CA 92118.
