William Birt Slater

Slater, William Birt 1924 ~ 2013 SAN DIEGO -- Birt Slater passed away peacefully at Grossmont Hospital, September 3, 2013. Birt was raised in Chatsworth, CA. He served in the Navy 1942-1945 as a pilot during WWII. He then enrolled in SDSU and graduated with a BA in 1952 then received his Master's Degree in 1965. Birt's 30 year teaching career in History began at South West Junior High then He moved to San Diego High School where he began his celebrated coaching career in football. From 1959 - 1977 Birt coached at Kearny High School. He was Defensive Analyst with the Chargers 1978 - 1983. Throughout the years, Birt was a member of IATSE Local Unions 122 and 728, working as stagehand summers and part-time. Birt became BA for Local 122; representing workers for fair pay and conditions until he retired 11 years later. Birt is survived by his best friend and wife Evelyn Slater married 63 years; his two sons John and Stephen Slater, his granddaughters, Loren McDermott and Jamie Helmantoler; his grandsons, Clint Cummings, William Slater, Patrick and Kevin McDermott and his great- grandson Marley Helmantoler. Birt was preceded in death by his Mother, Father, Brothers and Sister and the tragic and untimely death of his daughter, Christine McDermott. Birt will be dearly missed by family and friends and all the people he has touched throughout the years in San Diego and Mexico, where he regularly visited his second home.
