William G. Curtiss

Curtiss, William G. 06/04/1925 ~ 02/28/2013 RANCHO BERNARDO -- Bill was born on June 4, 1925 in Cleveland, Ohio to Doren A. and Sophie B. Curtiss. The family moved to San Diego in 1940 for the promise of a job for Bill's dad. Bill graduated from San Diego High in 1943 and shortly after entered the Army. He served in World War II with the 102nd Infantry Division, 9th Army, through Belgium and Germany. After discharge, Bill enrolled at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1950. His first job was with SD Gas & Electric, followed by the Bell Telephone Co. then to GD Astronautics. Later he worked for TRW, the Union Tribune, then eventually back to GD Astronautics until he retired in 1992. When he began work in San Diego, he also enjoyed playing softball, tennis, dancing and became active in the Revelers and a Cal Poly alumni group. At the Revelers, a singles dance club, he met Betty (B.J.) Bretl who became his wife on September 17, 1954 at Mission Hills UCC. They eventually settled in Rancho Bernardo where they raised their three daughters: Ginger, Jill and Karen. Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years Betty; daughters, Ginger Boss (David) of La Jolla, Jill Curtiss of Pacific Beach, and Karen Martin (Mitch) of Hope, ID; two grandchildren, Alexandra and Geoffrey Boss; and Bill's brother, Doren Curtiss (Allene) of Carlsbad. The family wishes to thank the Elizabeth Hospice for their valuable counsel and their caring services. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the local , memo "Memory of Bill Curtiss," 6632 Convoy Court, San Diego, CA 92111. A memorial service will be held at their church at 11a.m., on Saturday, March 30th. Community Church of Poway is located at 13501 Community Road, Poway, CA 92064.
