Harris, "Bud" Dorance LA JOLLA -- Dorance "Bud" Harris, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on December 24th, 2013. He was born in Sioux City, Iowa on July 31, 1926, to Orville and Cleo Harris. Bud joined the Army after high school. He was on the ship to Japan when the first atom bomb was dropped. During WWII, on a trip to visit his parents, he met his wife, Sue at La Jolla High School. They were married October, 16, 1949. Bud held many different jobs. He was a milkman for Dairy Mart Farms, a fireman, did masonry work for Callahan Bros., and in 1963, bought the Grand Car Wash in Pacific Beach. He also owned a Taco Bell. He retired at age 50. Harris was an avid sportsman. He played football and basketball in high school, did some boxing in the Army, and later took up tennis which became a family sport and one of his many passions. Some of his happiest moments were playing father-daughter events with daughter, Gaye and later, Robin. Two of his prouder achievements were winning two National Father-Daughter Championships in 2005 & 2007, at age 79 & 81. A supporter of youth sports, Bud founded Seaview Pop Warner in 1968, to have a league in the beach area and to coach his son, Bart. He coached basketball for Muirlands Jr. High grads trying out for the LJHS teams. Coaches were appreciative for the skills he taught the incoming freshmen. Bud Harris was the ultimate sports fan. He was an original season ticket holder of the Chargers, Rockets and Aztecs. His children were all LJHS Vikings and he was always in attendance. His commitment and support continued long after his children graduated. In 1994, LJHS honored "Bud Harris" as the first recipient of the Loyal Viking Award for his "dependability, team spirit and longstanding support." He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sue; his daughter and son-in-law, Gaye and Dr. Gary Bench; his daughter, Robin; his son and daughter-in-law, Bart and Deborah Harris; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
