In Memoriam Condolences

HERRING JR., GARVEN THOMAS December 9, 1918 to July 31, 2011 Garven was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, graduating from the University of Texas in 1940. He married his high school sweetheart, Jeraldine (Jerry) Hill, in 1941 and moved to Glendale, CA, spending the war years working for Lockheed Aircraft. While at Lockheed, he designed, installed, and flight-tested armament systems for the PV-1 Vega Ventura and the PV-2 Harpoon. From Glendale they moved to Santa Barbara and then to San Diego, where he worked for Convair and General Dynamics. Garven's priorities in life were Jerry, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was an expert shot, a champion fisherman, a beloved husband, an accomplished gardener and an adored father. A 1994 San Diego Marlin Club trophy states: "Garven Herring: Largest marlin by a man, Largest billfish of the season, Largest marlin of the season, Largest marlin on 20 lb. tackle". After Jerry's death in 2008, he continued gardening and capped his hunting career with a Colorado elk hunt in 2008. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Lynda Herring, and his daughter and son-in-law, Kate Herring and Mack Lewis. We miss him terribly.
